A History of the MWRA’s Tunnel Systems: Lessons Learned from a Century of Tunneling in Greater Boston
The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) and its predecessor organizations have been constructing water supply and wastewater tunnels in Massachusetts for well over a century. As part of the on-going design of its next deep-rock tunneling project, the Metropolitan Water Tunnel Program (MWTP), the MWRA has performed a detailed review of its archived historical records and published technical papers, focusing on gleaning valuable lessons learned during its long history of tunnel construction. This presentation provides a historical view of the MWRA’s tunnel systems, highlights several notable lessons learned.
